(WOMEN'S HISTORY.) Papers of author and activist Florence Guertin Tuttle. Approximately 100 items (0.8 linear feet); various conditions, but mostly only minor wear. Vp, 1888-1940

  • Notes: Florence Guertin Tuttle (1869-1951) of Brooklyn, NY was active in the women's suffrage and peace movements. She published several books, both fiction and on current events. Much of her correspondence is personal or family-related, including congratulations on her 1897 engagement, but a few of the later letters are from editors and organizations. Most notably, IBM president Thomas J. Watson wrote in 1940, expressing his desire to "talk over the European situation," adding that "I have no definite solution for it, but have definite opinions." Also included are an 1899 commonplace book titled "Journal of
Information: Scientific, Political, Historical, and Literary Jottings"; a short 1923 diary; a pair of manuscript short stories from 1883; an inscribed copy of her "The Awakening of Woman: Suggestions from the Psychic Side of Feminism," and its 1915 publication contract; 2 later typescript short stories; and a typescript play.
