(WOMEN''S RIGHTS.) Declaration of Rights of the Women of the United States.

(WOMEN''S RIGHTS.) Declaration of Rights of the Women of the United States. 4 printed pages, 11 x 8 1/2 inches, on one folding sheet, signed in type by Lucretia Mott, Susan B. Anthony and 23 others; chipping at edges, separations at folds. Philadelphia: National Woman Suffrage Association, 1876

  • Notes: Apparently a second edition of this important women''s rights milestone, drafted in honor of the national centennial, 4 July 1876. A copy of the declaration was presented in guerrilla fashion at a major centennial gathering held in Philadelphia''s Independence Square. Just as a senator was about to introduce the ambassador from Brazil, Susan B. Anthony stormed the stage and handed him a copy, then proceeded to read it on the steps of Independence Hall.
The Library of Congress holds what appears to be the only known copy of the first edition, very similar in design but with a different setting of type, bearing the title "Declaration and Protest of the Women of the United States." The first edition concludes with a postscript which encourages sympathizers to mail in their signatures to add to the original Declaration. The present edition adds a second postscript, soliciting a $1.00 donation to accompany the signature, and signed in type by Susan B. Anthony with her mailing address. 7 copies of this edition (and none of the first) in OCLC; none of either edition found at auction.
