(WOMEN.) Webster, Joseph Philbrick; composer. Two pieces of sheet music advocating women's suffrage.

(WOMEN.) Webster, Joseph Philbrick; composer. Two pieces of sheet music advocating women's suffrage. 4to, unbound; minor wear as noted. Chicago: Root & Cady, 1868

  • Notes: Elizabeth B. Dewing, lyricist. "All Rights for All! A Song for the Times." 13 1/4 x 9 1/2 inches. 5 pages on 3 detached sheets; short tears in margins. A song advocating for "All rights for free men and free labor": "In God-given rights we are equal / Man, woman, white, black, great, and small / Then legalize impartial suffrage, and guaranty all rights for all!" Dedicated to "that newspaper which has been most signal in the advocacy . . . the New York Tribune." One copy of this song appears in OCLC, a Cleveland printing of the same year; none traced at auction.
Luke Collin, lyricist. "Woman is Going to Vote." 13 1/4 x 10 1/4 inches. 6 pages on 2 leaves, unbound; minor wear and soiling. The chorus reads "She lectures, and doctors, and preaches / And notes the new cut of a coat / She''ll mend our political breaches / And renovate all with her vote." The verses are equally inflammatory: "Farewell to election corruptions / Of which the whole world has ta''en note / Let ev''ry man mind his own buttons / For woman is going to vote. . . . We''ve exercised far greater talents / In keeping our husbands a float / Come Harry, Tom, Dick, mind the cradle / We women are going to vote." The title page lists this song as one of a series of Webster compositions with the common title "Songs of the Present Time," along with "All Rights for All." This appears to be the first printing, with Root & Cady''s plate number 790 at the base of pages [2] through [5]. Its status as a scarce pre-fire Chicago imprint adds some interest. Crew, Suffragist Sheet Music S-1868-3; 2 copies of this first printing in OCLC.
