Washington, 1925-1948

  • Notes: an exceptional archive of correspondence between two giants of african-american studies. In 1925, Carter G. Woodson (1875-1950) historian, journalist, publisher and author wrote to Charles Harris Wesley (1891-1987) asking him for a resume. "I want to use this to show the possibility of Negroes in research. It is usually said that Negroes are not qualified for such serious work. A Memorandum of your career will help us refute this statement." Thus begins a life-long friendship and this rich archive of correspondence between Woodson and Wesley. Wesley was teaching at Howard University at the time. This archive covers the course of more than twenty years, in which the two discuss various projects and collaborations, among them "Negro Makers of History," "The Story of the Negro Re-Told," and "The Negro In Our History," all published by Woodson's Associated Publishers in Washington, D.C. The letters discuss a number of important issues, including Woodson's creation of "Negro History Week" in 1926. An invaluable primary research archive. Provenance: from the estate of Dorothy Porter, Charles Harris Wesley's second wife.
