Foch," as Supreme Commander of the Allied Armies, silver gelatin print, showing the representatives for the Allies standing on the steps of the railway carriage (CIWL #2419) in which the Armistice was signed. Additionally signed by Weygand, probably at a later date. Inscribed in the blank margin below the image. Approximately 10x8 inches (image), approximately 14x10 inches overall; dampstaining to bottom half affecting signatures, horizontal hard crease center left extending into image and another crossing extreme bottom of image, reinforced with cello tape verso. Np, 11 November 1818

  • Notes: "an armistice was signed to end the war to end all wars on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the elventh month" of 1918.
    The Allied participants shown in the image were, from left to right and front to back, British Rear Admiral George Hope, General Maxime Weygand, First Sea Lord Sir Rosslyn Wemyss, Foch, Royal Navy Captain J.P.R. Marriott, behind them are General Desticker and Captain LeMierry, in the top row, Commander Riedinger and Interpreter Laperche.
