(WORLD WAR ONE.) Three scrapbooks kept by an AEF aerial photographer. Approximately 400 photographs, many with manuscript captions, inserted into corner mounts in 3 albums hand-titled "Aeroplanes," "France," and "Germany." Oblong 4to, 10 x 12 inches, original limp cloth, minor wear. Various places, 1918-1919

  • Notes: Edward Ingle Jr. (1894-1958) of Lawrence, MA was a draftsman before the war. He arrived in Chatillon, France on 30 July 1918, serving in what became the 101st Photo Section, dedicated to providing aerial photographs of potential targets.

The "Aeroplane" scrapbook begins with 2 shots of Camp Hicks in Texas; includes 32 shots of British, French and Italian planes; moves on to a section of "Planes in Flight"; and concludes with "Aerial Photography" of French countryside, the last being a 7-photo collage strip which folds out to 25 inches.

The France and Germany albums include some commercially available shots of famous landmarks and battle scenes, but also original snapshots, particularly of the Chatillon area. One series shows children "on their way to the American camp to obtain food and coffee thrown away by American troops after eating." Also included are numerous aerial views of enemy trenches and supply lines. The Germany album dates from the post-war occupation.

With--a badge issued to Ingle's father as past president of the United British Societies of Lawrence, MA, 1912.
