(WORLD WAR TWO.) Field Information Agency Technical Handbook for . . . Field Teams. 2 maps. 14 mimeograph pages. 4to, 10½ x 8 inches, printed wrappers, staple-bound, blank rear wrapper detached; a bit of rust at staples, minor wear and toning. [Frankfurt, Germany], 6 September 1945

  • Notes: The Field Information Agency, Technical (FIAT) was an American military effort to gather scientific and technological intelligence during the occupation of Germany. This handbook was issued less than 4 months after the German surrender. It features a short introduction by the head of FIAT, Colonel Ralph M. Osborne, and a warning to avoid press contacts. It goes on to discuss the aims of FIAT, living conditions in devastated Germany, the importance of securing a good local driver, and travel to the French, English and Russian zones. The last 3 pages, "at the Target," discuss interrogation techniques, and confiscation of documents and equipment. Hoping to uphold the reputation of the United States as a nation of laws, agents are urged: "evacuation of samples does not mean looting, penalties for which are extremely severe. Watch your step!"

One map shows the Frankfurt neighborhood of Höchst, and the other is a large map of occupied Frankfurt with key routes marked in red. No other examples traced in OCLC.
