Photographs of Nash & Evans, vaudeville performers on the USO circuit.

Various places, 1936-1943 and undated
168 items (0.2 linear feet), mostly photographs with 3 letters and a few clippings and programs; minor wear.

  • Notes: Dick Nash and Janet Evans were a vaudeville duo who got their start as the "Dude Wranglers" by 1939, performing "fancy rope spinning, eccentric and acrobatic dancing, juggling and unicycle riding" (Oregon Daily Journal, 24 September 1939). They were a big hit on the USO circuit through at least 1944. Nash was very tall, lean and eccentric in his appearance; Evans was a contortionist who frequently raised her leg vertically above her head while performing tricks. Nash was a San Diego native who got his start performing in a similar act with his sister as Dick & Leota Nash circa 1936, according to a promotional photo.

Many of the 105 snapshots are well captioned on verso, for 1943 performances in Antigua, Senegal, British Guiana, the Virgin Islands, and (mostly) various military bases in Italy including Cassino.

A thick file of Nash & Evans promo photographs includes many duplicates. Also included are 5 promo shots of other vaudeville performers; a "This Week in Chicago" program with a paragraph on "Janet Evans, Specialty Dancer" before her partnership with Nash, 30 January 1937; a "Playhouse Program" listing vaudeville acts including "Dick & Leota Nash" in Winnipeg, Canada, 20 February [1938]; and 3 letters to Nash from his manager Mark Leddy, February 1939.
