  • Notes: Eugene Francis Savage (1883-1978) was a painter best known for large public mural projects. This painting was apparently done as a study for one of these murals, though the final work has not been traced. It commemorates Operation Dragoon, the Allied invasion of southern France which began on 15 August 1944. A map show the major actions of the campaign, with an inset key summarizing the Sixth Army Group and the naval forces which participated in the campaign. American and French flags are draped in mourning. Savage's 1936 study for the Texas Hall of State brought $16,730 in a recent auction.
