(WORLD WAR TWO.) Three issues of the Japanese-controlled English-language Shanghai Times covering the Battle of Okinawa.

(WORLD WAR TWO.) Three issues of the Japanese-controlled English-language Shanghai Times covering the Battle of Okinawa. Each 2 pages, 23 x 17½ inches; unbound, folds, moderate edge wear. Shanghai, China, 16, 17 and 19 April 1945

  • Notes: The Shanghai Times, a longstanding English-language newspaper for merchants and expatriates, was turned into an instrument of Japanese propaganda after the 1937 occupation. Most Europeans were held in internment camps (as seen in the 1987 film Empire of the Sun). These three issues were produced near the end of the war. The 19 April issue describes the hard-fought Allied victory at the battle of Okinawa: "5 Enemy Carriers, 3 Battleships, Cruiser, 4 Transports Sunk Off Okinawa. . . . Enemy Carrier Strength Reduced to Skeleton of Original Force." Another article argues that "Death of Roosevelt is Heavy Blow to U.S. . . . as there is no other man who can keep their conflicting interests together." The 16 and 17 April issues discuss Japanese successes in the early days of the Okinawa fight.
