WRIGHT, ORVILLE. Typed Letter Signed, to journalist and author Mark Sullivan,

AGREEING TO COMMENT ON AVIATION HISTORY CHAPTER WRIGHT, ORVILLE. Typed Letter Signed, to journalist and author Mark Sullivan, praising his depiction of life in America in 1900, agreeing to comment on his draft of a chapter on flying, and remarking that Rear Admiral Melville had expressed skepticism concerning the possibility of powered flight as late as 1901. 1 page, 4to; minor staining at center and upper edge, horizontal folds. Dayton, 9 July 1926

  • Notes: "I have been reading the first volume of your history with great interest. It produces a picture of life in America twenty-five years ago with a clearness and reality never approached in anything I have read before. . . . I would be glad to read over the draft of the chapter on flying as you suggest. . . . In your letter you mention Simon Newcomb as among others who as late as 1900 contended that flight was impossible. Rear Admiral Melville, whose training ought to have made him a better authority than Newcomb on such matters, expressed as much pessimism . . . in . . . 1901."
Sullivan's book, Our Times: The United States, 1900-1925, was first published in installments in 1926-35, and has often been used since as a source for the perception of historical events by ordinary Americans of the period.
