- Notes: In 1844, Cassius M. Clay, Henry Clay's cousin, issued a series of letters in newspapers (and published in pamphlet form) against slavery but advocating Henry Clay for President over the Liberty Party candidate. In this letter, Clay writes to the Governor of Tennessee, that it has "occassioned me great dissatisfaction. I have deemed it proper to address a note to the Ed. of the Reporter which will appear tomorrow, disavowing all participation in his views and disconnecting myself from him. I regretted the appearance of that indiscreet letter, from its mischievous tendency, as well as from the exceptionable language which it employs."
