  • Notes: an exceptionally early letter from the famous general, written during his first year at west point.
"I wish I were an Englishman so that I could enter it and wear kilts and a bearskin hat. The uniforms in our army are getting worse every year. Soon we won't have any dress uniforms at all. We have just one week and two days more of camp and I only have one more guard tour for which I am very thankful... I don't know whether you all realize that I am a working man and draw large sums of money which I never see... I think it is fifty two dollars a month. If I keep on I will be a land-holder..."
