Yakov Chernikhov (1889-1951)

Fundamentals of Contemporary Architecture.

Leningrad: Society of Architects, 1930.
Second and enlarged edition, quarto; three titles printed in Russian, French, and German respectively; complete with 46 tipped-in plates, 6 of which are in color, and black-and-white line illustrations throughout; bound in the original brown papered boards, black endpapers (minor offsetting to plates; lightly toned throughout, few minor marginal stains; rebacked with original spine preserved, other touch ups at edges and upper corner of front board, small loss at one corner, waterstain to white square on front, bookseller's description adhered to front pastedown); 12 x 8 ¼ in.

Chernikhov's book, Osnovy sovremennoi arkhitektury [Fundamentals of Contemporary Architecture] features dynamic illustrations of his visionary architectural designs. He was a prolific artist, creating more than 17,000 drawings which earned him the nickname, "the Soviet Piranesi." His extensive portfolio and teaching positions at various Russian schools quickly established him one of the most prominent Soviet Constructivists. Few of his designs were ever built, but his fantasy compositions alone were remarkably innovative and had an enormous impact on modern architecture.
