Yakov Chernikhov (1889-1951)

Fundamentals of Contemporary Architecture.

Leningrad: Society of Architects, 1930.
First edition, quarto; three titles printed in Russian, French, and German; illustrated with 5 color plates as well as numerous black-and-white photogravures and line illustrations throughout; rebound in modern cloth backed boards, spine gilt-lettered, floral patterned endpapers (crease down center of each page, occasional small indications of foxing; speckled fading cloth at spine, corners bumped); 10 5/8 x 8 3/8 in.

Chernikhov's first book, Osnovy sovremennoi arkhitektury [Fundamentals of Contemporary Architecture] features dynamic illustrations of his visionary architectural designs. He was a prolific artist, creating more than 17,000 drawings which earned him the nickname, "the Soviet Piranesi." His extensive portfolio and teaching positions at various educational institutions in Russia quickly established him as a prominent Soviet Constructivist. Few of his designs were ever built, but his fantasy compositions alone were remarkably innovative and had an enormous impact on modern architecture.
