(YORKTOWN CAMPAIGN.) Group of 10 letters from various parties to Brigadier General George Weedon. Various sizes and conditions. Vp, November 1780 to August 1781

  • Notes: An interesting group of letters relating to the northern Virginia militia in the final Yorktown campaign. 5 are written by colonels in charge of county militias: John Skinker, Anthony Thornton, Francis Peyton, Peter Wagener, and James Barbour. Colonel Thornton writes from Port Royal in Caroline County requesting that his men remain close to home: "We have been told the Baron has called for some men to be sent him. I have ever been ready to serve my country to the best of my abilitys & so are my men . . . I must entreat you earnestly not to order us to James River or any other station than Potomack, so long as it is necesary for a force to be kept for that place." Colonel Skinker reports on Benedict Arnold's movements: "I am informed the enemy are gone to sea." Colonel Barbour requests that Weedon co-ordinate his militia call-ups with Governor Jefferson. The remaining 5 letters concern supplies for Weedon's troops; one also introduces Doctor Goodwin Wilson as the new manager of all Virginia military hospitals. A full listing of these letters is available upon request.
