Zero Hans Schleger 1898-1976 Stop For Super Shell And Go. Circa 1950 20 x 48 inches. Condition A: horizontal fold: minor creases in image Paper Having lived and worked in both Berlin and New York, Hans Schleger finally settled in London in 1932 A pioneer of Modernism, heworked for two British Companies with artistically-progressive sensibilities: the London Underground for whom he also redesigned the logo and Shell for whom he created the intriguing "These Men Use Shell- Journalists" poster in 1938 In 1953, Schleger opened his agency, Schleger & Associates. In this image, Schleger very cleverly uses the horizontally-elongated format to emphasize the staying power of Super Shell, as well as implementing the collage/photomontage technique he cherished. In the image two very British motorists are being pushed forward by the powerful start of their roadster, with colored stripes of air indicating the speed at which they are traveling. Eye-catching and brilliant! ref. A Concise History of posters by John Barnicoat, Thames & Hudson, 1972 - p. 127 related image.
