Lot 65: Norman Lewis, Untitled (Abstraction in Orange), oil on canvas, 1967. Estimate $400,000 to $600,000.

Our October 6th African American Art auction features an outstanding group of abstract paintings led by the excellent 1967 Untitled (Abstraction in Orange) by Norman Lewis—the large canvas comes from a vibrant series depicting abstracted jazz musicians. The sale also features significant abstraction from the late 1960s to the 1990s by Charles Alston, Romare Bearden, Sam Gilliam and Hale Woodruff.

Modernist highlights include a wonderful drawing by Jacob Lawrence, a scarce stone carving by Marion Perkins, and a significant welded steel sculpture by Harold Cousins, all from the 1950s.
