Auction Highlights: Fine Photographs — October 5, 2023



Our October 5, 2023, Fine Photographs auction features a wide range of rare and important work including an unusually large-format example of Harry Shunk and Jànos Kender’s Le Salut de le Vide, in collaboration with Yves Klein, 1960, printed later; Steve McCurry’s Afghan Girl, Peshawar, Pakistan, 1984, printed later; Cindy Sherman’s Untitled (Lucille Ball), 1975, printed 2001; and William Klein’s Smoke & Veil, Paris (Vogue), 1958, printed 2008.

Lot 128: Peter Hujar, Lower Manhattan from the Harbor, silver print, 1976. Estimate $10,000 to $15,000.

The sale also features Peter Hujar’s melancholic Lower Manhattan from the Harbor, 1976; and Danny Lyon’s groundbreaking portfolio The Destruction of Lower Manhattan, complete with 77 photographs, 1967, printed 2005. The sale also includes Josef Koudelka’s Man with Horse, Romania, 1968, printed 1980s; Fan Ho’s Duet, 1962; and Dorothea Lange’s vintage Street Demonstration, San Francisco, 1936.

FSA Photographers & Documentary Photography

A suit of previously unseen FSA photographs includes important work by Dorothea Lange (highlighted by Mother and child nursing, Drought refugees from Oklahoma camping by the roadside, Blythe, California, 1936), Walker Evans, and others.

Documentary work by African American photographers or those documenting the Civil Rights Era are also featured, as well as renowned photojournalist Robert Cumins‘s suite of handmade albums with more than 340 wirephoto images related to the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Finally, we are pleased to offer two Edward S. Curtis volumes from The North American Indian: Volumes III, 1908, and IV, 1909.
