Lionel Edwards

Lionel Edwards, a painter from North Wales, displayed an early aptitude for drawing and a love of the outdoors. Edwards pursued his education at London’s Heatherly’s School of Art and Frank Calderon’s School of Animal Painting in the late 1800s, but frequently left the city to ride horses. Edwards eventually left London permanently for the countryside, where he enjoyed riding and painting.

As an avid outdoorsman and painter, Edwards combined expert knowledge of hunting with the technical prowess of a draughtsman to depict realistic hunting scenes. Creating many of his sketches on the spot, Edwards was a prolific and spontaneous artist. Edwards’ paintings perfectly capture the raw physicality of the hunt overlaid on the muted English countryside. Although watercolor was Edwards’ preferred medium, he also produced sketches and oil paintings, and Lionel Edwards’ prints and originals are popular with equine enthusiasts.
