SHERMAN, WILLIAM TECUMSEH. Autograph Letter Signed, “W.T. Sherman
/ General,” to General William B. Franklin, reporting that his letter written on behalf of
Bvt. Col. John G. Leefe was received concerning the vacancy in the Commissary, remark-
ing that “the President has agreed not to be in too much hurry, but to give time to hear
from all especially those on the remote Frontier,” and suggesting that he advise Leefe to get
endorsements from Col. Charles H. Smith, and Generals Knipe and Sheridan. 3 pages, 8vo,
“Headquarters Army of the United States” stationery, ruled paper, written on two sheets;
blind stamp from notary at one extreme corner of each sheet, horizontal folds, minor scat-
tered soiling.
