Robeson’s autobiography and defense of his political position. “As I see it, the
challenge to the Negro people in the United States can be stated in two, propositions: 1.
Freedom can be ours, here and now: the long sought after goal of full citizenship under the
Constitution is within our reach. 2. We have the power to achieve that goal: What we our-
selves do will be decisive.” Robeson never quite regained his stature amongst Americans after
the smear campaign of Senator Joe McCarthy and the House Un-American Activities
Committee hearings earlier in the 1950’s.
