HILL, AMBROSE POWELL. Autograph Letter Signed, “A.P. Hill,” to Alexander

Dallas Bache (“Prof A.D. Bache”), reporting that he has sent his map of the Boston shore,

offering explanations for the delay, asking whether he has a piece of surveying equipment,

Washington, 30 August [1855-61]

[1,000/2,000]

The Boston map is off to day. . . . I do not send this off with the same confidence attending the

Mobile, but with the keep of Lieut Bent I have done all I could.

Capt Davis’ map is so worn that a greater part of it had to be replotted, andWadsworth’s had to be

entirely re-reduced, which reduction I send on also . . . .There is a discrepancy between some of the

islands . . . as represented inW’s chart and as on Davis’ . . . .

Maj. J. Reynolds has been ordered to West Point as Commandant, . . . Capt Williams to Oregon

and CaptWithers here. . . .”

Hill (1825-1865) served in the Mexican-American War and the Seminole Campaign, then leaving

the army to join Virginia’s forces at the beginning of the Civil War; he fought in the Seven Days

Battles, Cedar Mountain, Second Bull Run, Chancellorsville, and he commanded the Confederate

forces as lieutenant general during the first day at Gettysburg; he was killed in battle at the close of the

siege of Petersburg.
