This block, one of a series of monumental woodcuts of New Orleans, was carved by the artist with
a modified miniature chainsaw into a single sheet of plywood. Born in New Orleans and raised in
the lower NinthWard, JohnT. Scott produced artwork shaped largely by the diverse and local African,
African-American, Caribbean and Creole cultures. In 1992, he was awarded a prestigious MacArthur
