Benois (1901-1988) was a Russian-born scenographer, set, and costume designer who studied under

his father Alexandre Benois, the artist for the Imperial Mariinsky Opera House in St. Petersburg.

After immigrating to Paris at age 22, he worked under Sergei Diaghilev as the principal set designer

for several Ballets Russes productions. Eventually, he relocated to Italy where he became the lead

scenographer for the Teatro Della Scala in Milan. Over the course of his career, he worked on an

estimated 300 productions around the world.
