Each of these cartoons is addressed “To Kirk from his friend in Kansas,” and two are initialed
H.C.J. They appear to satirize the controversial Republican nomination process of 1912, in
which challenger Roosevelt won a series of stirring primary victories in Ohio, New Jersey and
elsewhere, but was out-maneuvered by President Taft at the convention in Chicago.
