promissory notes. The letters, concerning money matters, sending checks and agreements.

Together 6 pages, mostly 4to, “Waldorf-Astoria” stationery. Three with retained copy of

related letter to Porter. The documents, directing Albert Cole to pay the legal firm of

O’Melveny,Tuller & Myers; transferring three promissory notes to the First National Bank

of Peru, IN; granting power of attorney to Albert Cole; and three promissory notes accom-

plished in another hand for varying amounts up to $10,000, each to Wabash Valley Trust

Company. Together 6 pages, the promissory notes each 3

two notes with cancellation ink stamps (not affecting signature), few with brittling to edges

and minor loss to corners.

crises due to tax matters and it would

calm me to know how far I can go with-

out being refused.

As you undoubtedly know I only get

ten cents on the dollar and it’s very difficult

to keep the wolf away from the door. . . .”

20 March 1945: “Regarding the

$25,000.00 . . . keep it in some safe

place where it can’t be used . . . until I

need it for the secret purpose which I have

in mind. . . . MEXICAN HAYRIDE

instead of continuing to run through next

summer, was so hard hit that it folded its

tent last Saturday night. . . .”

5 September 1952:“. . . JohnWharton .

. . advises me that I should not touch one

cent of my Mother’s estate until all the

taxes are settled.

. . . It would be nice for me if I could

touch a bit of it.”
