COMMENTING ON GRANT’SVICTORY IN 1868 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

10

DIX, JOHN A. Autograph Letter Signed, to Harry S. Tuckerman, conveying that

his cousin is going to Italy, expressing gratitude at the success of his brother’s diplomatic

career, complaining that the area surrounding NewYork City is not as desirable as Boston’s

countryside, and stating that the Democrats should be thankful of Dix’s warning about

[Horatio] Seymour. 4 pages, 8vo, written on a single folded sheet; minor chipping at edges.

Paris, 30 November 1868

[300/400]

. . . I am happy to perceive that the Democrats are getting, not merely reconciled to but, grati-

fied with their defeat. [James] Brooks of the Express, I am told, suggests that their electors

should cast votes for Grant. Under these circumstances I think they are bound in common jus-

tice to cancel all the abuse they poured on my devoted head, & indeed, to thank me for the

truth I told them about Seymour.”
