EDWARD M. BANNISTER (1828 - 1901)
Untitled (Pastoral Landscape).
Oil on linen canvas, 1891. 508x762 mm; 20x30 inches. Signed and dated in oil, lower right.
Provenance: according to the consignor, acquired from a descendant of the Hearst family; Helen
De Rosa, Los Altos Hills, CA (circa late 1960s); thence by descent to a private collection, CA.
Exhibited: Charles G. Calder, Providence, RI, with the gallery label on the stretcher bars, with 258
Westminster Street address. The painting also has a label printed “title, artist, address’ but the pencil
inscription is too indistinct to read.
This painting is a very fine example of Bannister’s mid- to later career pastoral landscapes. It’s
apparently related to his smaller
Pleasant Pastures
, 1887, in the collection of the Smithsonian
American Art Museum with a similar copse of trees and river view. This composition of separated
foreground with a partial view to the horizon is a typical Bannister device; here he also includes
small dashes of yellow flowers in the impastoed foreground.
