of the official account of Anson’s voyage to disrupt Spanish shipping in the Pacific,

one of the most famous 18th-century circumnavigations. Anson’s flagship the Centurion first spent

time off the coast of Chile, sacked the small Peruvian town of Paita, went on to Acapulco, visited vari-

ous Pacific islands, stopped in Macau and Canton, and made a dramatic capture of a galleon bound

for Manila before returning to England. European Americana 748/225; Hill 1817 (“a masterpiece

Provenance: subscriber’s copy issued to Sir Edward Hulse, at that time the physician to King George
