x6 inches, full
margins. Second state (of 3), before the artist’s signature on the stone and publication in
Les Temps Nouveaux
. One of approximately only 14 impressions in this state printed in
colors, there were also approximately 14 impressions in this state printed in a single color.
Inscribed “ep. d’essai no. 9” in pencil, lower left.A superb impression with vibrant colors.
This is the only color lithograph that Pissarro produced; he found color lithography to
be lacking as a medium for the representation of nature that he sought. This color
lithograph was created as the frontispiece for the journal
Les Temps Nouveaux
, published
by Jean Grave, Paris, to accompany the text of a lecture by Anarchist Prince Kropotkin.
