Sale 2490 - Rare & Important Travel Posters, October 25, 2018

SAMUEL JOHN MILTON BROWN (1873-1965) 1 c THE BLUE FUNNEL LINE / TO S. AFRICA & AUSTRALIA. Circa 1920s. 35 3 / 4 x24 inches, 90 3 / 4 x61 cm. Condition A / A-: minor creases and abrasions at edges. The Blue Funnel Line was one of Britain’s largest shipping companies, yet it remains far less known than others because they had substantially fewer posters produced. This was most likely because they were primarily involved with transporting cargo, although most of their vessels were equipped to carry a small number of passengers as well. Depicted is the S.S. Nestor (or her sister ship the S.S. Ulysses ), which were both passenger ships. Brown was a maritime painter, but he also designed posters for shipping companies including the Cunard Line.   [1,000/1,500]
