29 c GEORGES LEPAPE. “Sur la Terrasse.” Cover illustration for Vogue magazine, published May 10, 1930. Gouache and graphite on paper, tipped to window matte. 330x300 mm; 13x11 3 / 4 inches, full sheet. Signed and dated, lower left image. [8,000/12,000] A classic Lepape Vogue cover for an issue devoted to the work of influential English-American fashion designer Charles James. The model in the image is wearing an example of the classic wide-brimmed felt hat he popularized. Though 1930 was still early in his career, James was already known for his spiral-zipped dress and the “Taxi Dress” (described as “so easy to wear it could be slipped on in the back seat of a taxi”). He had recently moved to Paris and would gain clients and expand his range before moving to New York City and founding his eponymous brand in 1939, making his permanent mark in the world of international fashion. 28 29
