ALFRED EISENSTAEDT (1898-1995) WWII portrait of photographer Margaret Bourke-White in uniform. Circa 1944.

ALFRED EISENSTAEDT (1898-1995)
WWII portrait of photographer Margaret Bourke-White in uniform. Circa 1944.
Silver print, the image measuring 9½x7 5/8 inches (24.1x19.4 cm.), the sheet slightly larger, with Bourke-White signature and inscription in ink on recto, and Eisenstaedt's PIX credit stamp on verso.

  • Condition: Alfred Eisenstaedt's portrait of fellow photographer Margaret Bourke-White (circa 1944) is in good condition. The print is bright and dimensional, with a range of rich tones. With her signature, and showing the young photographer in the field, the portrait is dynamic and vivid.

The print does show evidence of handling, including two hard diagonal creases, both of which have broken the emulsion and appear in the lower left quadrant. These seem to have been expertly reinforced on verso. This area also shows some craquelure from handling, both at the far left edge and within her shoulder and lower chin. The left edge shows a couple other tiny closed tears that begin in the margin and extend just slightly into the image area--these too appear to have been reinforced on verso. There are a couple minor creases at the upper corners and handling crease at the lower left, none of which intrude on the central image area.

The lower left quadrant--within Bourke-White's collar and shoulder--also shows an area that appears to be inpainted and corrected, but this is likely original to the print. The details of her neck and collar were carefully rendered and highlighted, retouching that is visible in the catalogue illustration.

With Bourke-White signature and inscription in ink on recto, within the image area "To my dear Anne," and Eisenstaedt's PIX credit stamp on verso. Print verso is warmed. Overall a compelling and rare portrait.
