    Generously donated by the Estate of Charles Silverstein. Silverstein (1935 – 2023) was an American writer, therapist, and LGBT rights advocate. He was best known for his presentation as a graduate student before the American Psychiatric Association in 1973 that led to the removal of homosexuality as a mental illness from the organization's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual. Proceeds of this item's sale will benefit The NYC LGBT Community Center.
  • Notes:
    Flowers is based on a photograph of hibiscus flowers by Patricia Caulfield that appeared in Modern Photography in June 1964. Andy Warhol created paintings of this subject, and revisited the image in a later portfolio of screenprints and in a personal project with printer Rupert Jasen Smith. (see Feldman-Schellmann II.64-73 and III.A14).
