ANTOINE-FRANÇOIS CALLET
(Paris 1741-1823 Paris)
King Solomon's Judgment.
Gray wash over black chalk on cream laid paper. 125x201 mm; 5x8 inches. Squared in black chalk for transfer.
The composition of the current drawing is almost identical to Callet's painting Eponine et Sabinus Condamnés par Vespasian that won him the Prix de Rome in 1764 and is today in the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris. Stylistically the current sheet can be compared to the 2 drawings illustrated in 18th Century French Drawings in New York Collections, New York, 1999, no. 60 and particularly no. 85.
