LOUIS-JEAN DESPREZ (ATTRIBUTED TO)

(Auxerre 1742-1804 Stockholm)
Two watercolors.

Il Duomo di Cremona. 152x175 mm; 6x6 7/8 inches. Titled in ink, upper right recto * A Couple and a Child Walking through a Grotto. 105x116 mm; 4 1/8x4 1/2 inches.

In 1776, Desprez traveled to Italy with the Prix de Rome obtained at the Academy of Architecture. In Rome he joined the writer Vivant-Denon and traveled in 1778 and 1779 across southern Italy and Sicily. They undertook the expedition enlisted by the Abbé de Saint-Non to contribute to the latter's 5 volume project, the Voyage Pittoresque, ou description des Royaumes de Naples et de Sicilie, 1781-85. The drawings supplied by Desprez, Fragonard and Hubert Robert were then etched partly by Saint-Non himself.

The current view is not likely part of that group, but could well have originated either earlier or in 1784, when Desprez left Italy for Stockholm to become the first architect of Gustav III. The second drawing could be a draft for a stage set.
