ARRIVAL OF DR. MUDD AT FORT JEFFERSON
(CIVIL WAR.) Herrick, Harrison B. Group of 3 daily diaries for 1861, 1863 and 1865, covering his service in Company D of the 110th Regiment of New York State Volunteers, including their participation in the siege of Port Hudson and their garrison duty at the infamous Union prison Fort Jefferson. Each 12mo, morocco wallet style bindings, worn; the diaries for 1861 and 1863 in pencil, the other mostly in pen; condition varies but generally quite legible. Vp, 1861-65
- Notes: The first diary covers the period from his initial enlistment in April 1861 to the end of that year. The diary describes training and the trip to Washington, where the regiment was reviewed by Lincoln. In July 1861 Herrick is discharged for medical reasons (he would re-enlist in August 1862). The 1863 diary covers the entire year and includes descriptions of the siege of and assault on Port Hudson. Herrick, however, was ill during this period and mostly stayed in camp away from the battle action. In February 1864, the 110th began garrison duty at Fort Jefferson. This diary, covering the entire year, is one of very few first-hand accounts from inside the infamous Union prison, located on Garden Key Island in the Gulf of Mexico. Herrick's descriptions tend to be somewhat monotonous: the weather, his health, which ships had come in, his impressions of various drills. Occasionally, he reports on incidents with prisoners: a prison detail's discovery of coffins while digging a foundation for a new building, an officer being arrested for selling whiskey to prisoners, prisoners coming in off boats, a prisoner being "strung up" for stealing. The most significant content to the diary is related to Lincoln's assassination. When a ship brings the news to the prison on April 22, "they had three prisoners slung up for rejoicing over it." On July 24, "About 2 p.m. the naval transport Florida... came in with the conspirators Arnold, Dr. Mud, C. Laughin." Herrick is mustered out in August 1865. with -- Two diaries by Herrick for 1866 and 1867.
