a graphic letter written by a surgeon, describing the battle of Fredericksburg and its casualties, with a full-page battle plan. 4 pages, folded 8vo sheet; lacks the beginning of the letter, stains from prior mounting along fold. [Fredericksburg, December 1862]
- Notes: "About nine A.M. the battle commenced and soon the wounded came in in great numbers... I saw more surgery that day than I ever want to see again. When we got through with the amputations, there was a pile of limbs in one corner at least two feet deep and the floor was slippery with blood of our brave men..."
