Blinded by Jimcro.[sic] Charcoal and wash drawing showing a crow (Jimcro) tearing out the eyes of a black man (Isaac Woodward), 14x12 inches sight size; Signed by Tapley along the left edge; matted, somewhat darkened. Np, circa 1945 African-American artist Melvin Tapley, while best known as a cartoonist, produced a considerble body of highly charged political drawings. In 1946, Isaac Woodward, a veteran of World War II, had his eyes gouged out by a police-chief in South Carolina, following an incident in which he refused to move to the back of a segregated bus. The chief was exonerated by an all white jury.
