(ART.) WELLS, JAMES LESEGNE.
Construction. Lithographed print, showing Black men working at a construction site, 11x13 inches sight size; somehwat toned; Signed and numbered on the mat (8/10), Np, circa 1930s Wells (1902-1991) attended Lincoln University before transferring to Columbia University, where he majored in art. Early influences were Albrecht Duerer and the German Expressionists. After graduating, he worked predominantly with wood-block prints, illustrating magazines and books. In 1931 he won the Harmon Gold Medal for his painting, "Flight in Egypt." Through the 1930s and 1940s he chose to work almost entirely with graphics.
