AUDUBON, JOHN JAMES. Autograph Letter Signed, to an unnamed recipient, informing him that he has arrived in Wheeling Viginia in the midst of a snow

AUDUBON, JOHN JAMES. Autograph Letter Signed, to an unnamed recipient, informing him that he has arrived in Wheeling Viginia in the midst of a snow storm, discussing the cost of the journey, relating his future travel plans to Louisville, and mentioning his travel companions and mutual friends. 1 page, single 4to sheet; nicely framed with a calling card. Wheeling, 16 March 1843

  • Notes: "We arrived here all well... you will marvel to hear, that it is now snowing smartly, and not likely to stop this day... We expect to leave for Louisville at 10, providing the storm abates and the weather permits... My young folks are full of spirits. Mr. Fellows of Louisville is one of our companions and a Mr. Hall of Louisiana... If I have time I will find you the name of the steamer we go with..."
This letter was written at the start of Audubon's trip to the West, the basis for his monumental work on the quadrupeds of North America. Audubon reached St. Louis on 28 March 1843, eventually leaving for a 6-month journey up the Missouri on 25 April 1843. Audubon referred to this trip as the "grand and Last Journey I intend to make as a Naturalist." See Boehme et. al. John James Audubon in the West: The Last Expedition (New York and Cody, 2000) for a comprehensive exhibition relating to the journey.
