The River Dee runs through Scotland to Aberdeen. Balmoral Castle, summer home of Britain's royal family, sits along the river, which accounts for the name "Royal Deeside." The landscape along the river is said to be amongst the most beautiful in Scotland. Cooper shows this enchanting valley from behind trees in the foreground. The unusual color scheme serves to add to the appeal of the landscape.
