First edition, quarto; first state of text with misprints "low wail" on page 14, "pieces" on page 81, and "While Tin Woodman" on page 271; inscribed by illustrator W.W. Denslow (1856-1915) in ink to W.F. Burows Jr., "all in great fun" on the front free endpaper alongside his cipher, dated January 1, 1901; with 24 inserted full-color plates by Denslow and numerous text illustrations throughout, illustrated title in Blank's State A with no copyright stamp at verso, the plate showing Dorothy holding Toto by the ear appears opposite page 12 instead of page 14, with plates opposite pp. 34 and 92 in the corrected second state; bound in full pictorial cloth stamped in green and red, Binding B: with the imprint in non-serifed red capital letters at spine foot, pictorial pastedowns, the lower featuring the 11-line colophon enclosed in a decorative border (minor spotting and soiling to cloth as usual, the interior is particularly clean and bright); housed in a custom green morocco-backed clamshell box with red morocco label and gilt tooling; 8 3/8 x 6 1/8 in.
