  • Provenance:
    Downtown Gallery, New York (label).
    Private collection, Massachusetts.

  • Literature:
    F. K. Pohl, Ben Shahn: New Deal Artist in a Cold War Climate, 1947-1954, University of Texas Press, Austin, 1989, page 119.

A print of this drawing was used as a Christmas card by Ben Shahn and his wife in 1949. It was also screenprinted in an edition of 200 and exclusively distributed by Downtown Gallery during the 1950s. According to Shahn, the print workshop went out of business and sold their screens to another workshop, which continued to issue unauthorized "pirated" prints of Silent Night, one of Shahn's most popular compositions. Furthermore, according to Frances K. Pohl, the author Ben Shahn: New Deal Artist in a Cold War Climate, 1947-1954, there is a possibility that the use of Silent Night in Masses and Mainstream, an American monthly Marxist publication, may have not been authorized by Shahn.
