  • Provenance:
The Downtown Gallery, New York (label).
    Sotheby's (online auction), March 12, 2003.
Collection of Gerald Ferguson, Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Thence by descent to current owner, New Jersey.

During the 1940s, Yasuo Kuniyoshi divided his time between Woodstock and New York, where he taught at the Art Students League. He was active in several artist welfare groups and his artwork began to show his concern for the state of society in the aftermath of the Great Depression. Many of his drawings from this time period show despair and decay, like in the present work on paper. He did not preoccupy himself with ruins for long; in the last few years of Kuniyoshi's life, he returned to the imaginative festival scenes of his early career.
