  • Notes: English translation of Erasmus's 1517-24 Latin paraphrase by Nicholas Udall, Miles Coverdale, and others, together with the Great Bible version of the New Testament. "Paraphrasing was . . . a literary, hermeneutic, and pedagogical method admirably suited to Erasmus's purpose, which was not that of replacing the Gospels but of making them easier to read" (Devereux). The first volume, containing Matthew-Acts, is one of several variants to appear the same year; the second volume, containing Romans-Revelation, is the first edition. Herbert 72; STC 2854.5, 2854.7; Devereux, Renaissance English Translations of Erasmus 26.4.7, 26.5.1.
