  • Condition: Brassai's iconic image and stunning composition Couple d'amoureux, quartier place d'Italie, Paris, 1932; printed circa 1970 is in nearly excellent condition. The print is rich and lustrous, with deep black tones and bright highlights.

Under close examination in raking light, it is possible to notice a few slight superficial inconsistencies, including a small retouching linear mark on the man's shoulder and an exceedingly faint handling mark in the lower right quadrant, which is hardly noticeable, even in raking light. Any other inconsistencies visible are in the negative and inherent to the image, and not on the surface of the print.

There are no margins on the print, and the extreme edges evidence some minuscule tiny chips, most notably one chip on the upper right edge, and a tiny one on the lower right edge. The corners are slightly rubbed with a bit of loss on their tips, and the lower right corner evidences tiny wrinkles. All these slight inconsistencies remain unobtrusive and do not detract from the overall presentation at all.

The verso is lightly soiled, with Brassaï's signature in ink, and his title, negative date, and notations pl. 78, page 71 in pencil, and his copyright and "Tirage de l'Auteur" stamps, on verso.

A romantic image that is widely reproduced and a beautiful print.
