(BRAZIL.) Hand-forged iron fetish of Exu (pronounced esshu) a Yoruba deity holding a spear and a triton; the anthropomorphic head represents a man with animal ears; some light rust. 26 inches high. VERY GOOD CONDITION. Bahia, circa 1950 E800/1,200 Known as the Trickster, or Messenger, Exu is the Yoruba equivalent of Hermes in the Greek pantheon. A household fetish, used primarily to send a message (via a trick) to someone annoying or otherwise bothersome. Nowhere else in the African diaspora is the Yoruba tradition more closely followed than in the Bahia section.
