Rare variant of the third edition, three octavo volumes; with cancel title pages dated 1840 listing "Boz" as author but including the "The Author's Introduction to the Third Edition" dated 1841; illustrated with three etched frontispieces and 21 plates by George Cruikshank; bound in brown fine diaper-grain cloth blind stamped with an arabesque border, spine lettered in gilt, yellowish white coated endpapers (some plates lightly toned, few with spots and offsetting; scattered spots and small stains, short marginal tear to pp. 253-256 in vol. [Together with] Two typed letters signed in black ink by author of George Cruikshank's catalogue raisonne, Albert M. Cohn to Monroe M. Schwarzchild, Esq. on 21 Gosvenor Place stationery dated March 16th and April 18th, 1914, in which Cohn notes the rarity of this variant issue, requests the collation, and explains his reasoning for not including it in his own book, "Since writing you I have come across another copy, but this does not contain the xii. preliminary pp. which, I fancy, are to be found in very few copies, if your own is not unique"; two leaves laid in at front of vol. I; both 7 5/8 x 6 in.

Marchmont 196; Podeschi/Gimbel A29; Smith 4, page 36.
